Before buying a used car in Hong Kong: inspection questions

An independent inspection can provide information about the car at the time it is examined. It cannot reveal every hidden fault or guarantee future reliability. Arrange the seller’s permission and agree a written checklist before paying for the inspection or committing to the purchase.

What access will the inspector have?

Ask whether the inspection includes a lift, diagnostic scan, cold start, road test and photographic report. A seller may restrict dismantling or test driving; the report should record those limits. For a hybrid or EV, ask separately what battery information can be obtained and whether it is a measurement, software estimate or visual observation.

What the inspection or service should clarify

Agree these points with the garage before booking. A list of possible checks is not a diagnosis of your car, and the quoted scope should state which are included.

  • Vehicle identity and available service records
  • Body, underbody, fluids and mechanical checks
  • Diagnostic scan and road test if agreed
  • Written findings, limits and repair recommendations

What changes the quote?

Ask for a written HKD quote identifying the vehicle, parts, labour and assessment fee. Compare the same scope across garages; a package name or starting price alone does not show what will be done.

  • Vehicle type and inspection depth
  • Lift access, scan tools and travel
  • Separate specialist tests or follow-up inspection

Prepare useful information

Send the model year, powertrain, mileage and service history. Describe the exact warning or symptom and when it happens. Include whether the car can be driven and where it is parked; confirm access and transport separately from the repair price.

  • Where is the car and has the seller agreed to an inspection?
  • Are you concerned about accident history, mileage or battery health?

Before authorising the work

Confirm whether the quotation is fixed or subject to inspection, what is excluded, when parts are expected and how extra work is approved. Ask for written warranty terms and the follow-up process if a symptom remains. Keep the invoice and job sheet with the maintenance record. Carservice.hk is an enquiry platform; the responding garage performs the work and agrees its terms directly with you.
