Comparing Hong Kong car repair quotes: a practical checklist

A low starting price may cover a different job from a fully itemised quote. Before comparing totals, ask both garages to describe the same vehicle, symptoms and proposed scope. This guide helps turn a vague price enquiry into a written agreement you can review.

Fixed quote or inspection estimate?

An estimate before inspection is not the same as an agreed repair price. Ask what must be inspected first, whether dismantling is chargeable and whether you can decline the proposed repair afterwards. Set a limit for additional work and require approval before the garage orders parts. Keep the conversation and the final job sheet together.

What the inspection or service should clarify

Agree these points with the garage before booking. A list of possible checks is not a diagnosis of your car, and the quoted scope should state which are included.

  • Manufacturer schedule and previous service record
  • Engine oil and filter if applicable
  • Brake, tyre, fluid and suspension inspections
  • Written findings and separately authorised repairs

What changes the quote?

Ask for a written HKD quote identifying the vehicle, parts, labour and assessment fee. Compare the same scope across garages; a package name or starting price alone does not show what will be done.

  • Engine/powertrain and approved oil specification
  • Filters, consumables and labour listed separately
  • Inspection only versus parts actually replaced

Prepare useful information

Send the model year, powertrain, mileage and service history. Describe the exact warning or symptom and when it happens. Include whether the car can be driven and where it is parked; confirm access and transport separately from the repair price.

  • When was the last service and what was replaced?
  • Are there warnings, leaks or changes in how the car drives?

Before authorising the work

Confirm whether the quotation is fixed or subject to inspection, what is excluded, when parts are expected and how extra work is approved. Ask for written warranty terms and the follow-up process if a symptom remains. Keep the invoice and job sheet with the maintenance record. Carservice.hk is an enquiry platform; the responding garage performs the work and agrees its terms directly with you.
