Car will not start: battery, charging or another fault?
A non-starting car does not automatically need a new battery. Tell the garage whether the engine cranks, clicks or makes no sound, and whether the lights or dashboard behave differently. These observations help plan testing, but a diagnosis still requires checks on the vehicle.

Check the cause of discharge
Ask whether the proposed test covers battery condition, charging performance and possible unwanted electrical draw. If the battery is replaced without addressing another fault, the problem may return. Battery type, capacity, dimensions and any registration procedure must match the vehicle; a cheaper unit with the wrong specification is not a like-for-like alternative.
What the inspection or service should clarify
Agree these points with the garage before booking. A list of possible checks is not a diagnosis of your car, and the quoted scope should state which are included.
- Battery condition and charging-system checks
- Correct size, capacity and technology
- Installation and battery registration if required
- Written warranty and old-battery handling
What changes the quote?
Ask for a written HKD quote identifying the vehicle, parts, labour and assessment fee. Compare the same scope across garages; a package name or starting price alone does not show what will be done.
- Battery specification and brand
- On-site call-out versus workshop work
- Coding/registration and charging-system diagnosis
Prepare useful information
Send the model year, powertrain, mileage and service history. Describe the exact warning or symptom and when it happens. Include whether the car can be driven and where it is parked; confirm access and transport separately from the repair price.
- What happens when you try to start the vehicle?
- What does the current battery label show?
Before authorising the work
Confirm whether the quotation is fixed or subject to inspection, what is excluded, when parts are expected and how extra work is approved. Ask for written warranty terms and the follow-up process if a symptom remains. Keep the invoice and job sheet with the maintenance record. Carservice.hk is an enquiry platform; the responding garage performs the work and agrees its terms directly with you.
