Engine oil and filter changes
Engine oil lubricates moving components inside a combustion engine. An oil change removes used oil and replaces it with oil meeting the engine’s required specification, usually together with the oil filter. The service applies to petrol engines in conventional and hybrid cars; a pure EV has no engine-oil change.
Viscosity is not the complete oil specification
A marking such as 0W-20 describes viscosity, but the engine may also require a particular manufacturer approval. Two products with the same viscosity are not necessarily suitable substitutes. Oil capacity varies with the engine, so a quote needs both the product specification and the quantity, not simply a bottle price.
What happens during an oil change?
The workshop drains or extracts the used oil using the appropriate procedure, changes the filter and necessary sealing items, refills to the specified level and checks for leakage. A service reminder may be reset after the work. An oil-pressure warning, visible leak or unusual oil consumption requires investigation beyond this routine operation.
Oil-change prices: product, capacity and filter
Compare a complete oil-and-filter service with another complete service. A low advertised price may use a different quantity or exclude the filter and labour. Owner-supplied oil is a separate arrangement; its acceptance and any effect on the garage’s workmanship terms should be clear before the visit.
