i3 · Range Extender petrol engine
BMW i3
Identify battery-electric or range-extender version
For range-extender versions only; the small petrol engine needs engine-specific checks.
Charging faults, cooling checks and measured battery capacity require different tests.
The accessory battery is separate from the traction pack; match the model-specific technology.
Use the chassis, production year and fitted equipment to confirm part numbers and supply.

Battery-electric and range-extender versions
BMW offered the earlier i3 as a battery-electric car and with an optional two-cylinder petrol range-extender that generates electricity. The range-extender version still has a combustion engine; the battery-electric version does not. BMW has announced a new all-electric i3 saloon, so the model name alone is no longer enough to identify the vehicle.
